Week 24

You only see this in Italy.

(Week 18 Caserta)

I would like to start this email by sharing a couple funny things that
only happen in the Italy mission...
1. My favorite moment ever!!! An English course student walks into
church, finds me and hands me a potted olive tree. Flushed face I have a
confused look on my face and ask him why and he simply says "it's a
gift, Buon Natale"! I set it on the ground in front of me and Sorella
Robertson and I turn to eachother and DIE!!! A woman from the ward
says she will plant it with her olive trees and put "Sorella Nelson"
on it in remembrance of me.
The olive tree Face with tears of joyFace with tears of joyFace with tears of joyFace with tears of joy
2. We are making pranzo one lovely day and look out our window to see
our neighbor pulling a bucket on a rope up and down the side of the
building. We then realized that his son was down below putting
groceries into the bucket and then the father would pull the
bucket up.
The right way to do groceries.
3. During the Ward Christmas party bishop opened up the time to anyone
who wanted to sing or say something as entertainment. One sweet woman
who I adore immediately gets up to recite a Poem she had written in
Napoletano, she was later accompanied by other sisters in Silent Night
until a brother gets up and says "SOLO!" He then proceeds to take the
mic from the women to sing Silent Night himself. Multiple musical notes
4. Under the Christmas tree of a sister in the ward, there are at
LEAST 12 Penetone cakes! They are super dry and tasteless cakes that
are somehow ridiculously popular here.

We have had a lot of success this week. We have three awesome
investigators right now.
GianFranco is about 49 and has been kinda an eternal investigator. He
is an English course student. He took lessons a long time ago from
Anziani and he actually had quit smoking for 4 months. When I first
arrived I thought he was a member because he comes to church almost
every Sunday. We have started teaching him and he loves the gospel. He
already knows so much and we want to help him quit smoking again! We
invited him to be baptized and are helping him progress towards that.

Silvanna is in her 50s. She was basically a member in southern Italy,
Taranto, with a calling and everything when she was younger. Like
GianFranco, she knows so much about the church from past lessons and
already comes to church most Sunday's. She has been hard to get ahold
of this week because one of her four cats is super sick but we hope
next week we can see her more.
Lucia is 32 and is literally Golden! She has been an English course
student for two months and showed interest in our spiritual thoughts
so we set up an appointment and etc etc etc. She is super awesome and
spent a whole morning with us at the American military base for the
baptism of a little girl there. Lucia was a trooper and was so awesome
even though the entire ceremony was done in English. I really can't
wait to see Lucia keep progressing!

I am so lucky to be here in Italy with these wonderful people.
On the American base with Daniel and Lucia
A
couple highlights from the week...

It was Vinni's, an eternal investigator, anniversary party and I
completely forgot about it. Once I realized we had missed it, I felt
like throwing up I felt so bad, so I immediately called her to
apologize. We set up an appointment for the next day and I just felt
like crying as she showed me pictures of the event. I again apologized
and told her that I truly wanted to be there and she just looked at me
and said us bringing her the word of God is more important. She then
gave me one of the special party favors that we had helped her make. I
literally just wanted to cry, I couldn't believe how kind this woman
was!
Wedding favor from Vini.
We have a couple area books from Anziani years and years ago that we
have been looking through. I probably called over 50 numbers until we
had three or four people who said we could come by. We went to visit a
woman named Geatana who is soooooo fantastic!!! We went to her
adorable shop where her 9 year old daughter was helping her. She told
us that back when the Anziani tried teaching her she always loved
their messages because it brought her hope and she said she has missed
it.
Sorella Messina, the sweetest old woman in the ward who is the only
member in her family. I adore this woman soooo much even though it's
hard for us to understand each other because of the dialect. Whenever
I look into her little eyes I just see these little stars and ah I
just love her! After the Christmas party, I was talking to her as she
sat stroking my hair. She pulled out a massive chocolate Ferrero
Rocher and told me Buon Natale. Once again I was near tears. Here is
this woman who's home life is rough, does not have much, she probably
can't remember my last name but here she is wishing ME a merry
Christmas and turning outwards to someone who has only been to her
home three times in the past 4+ months. As a read the story called
"dinner with the Dombroskis" in the ensign I thought of this sweet
sweet woman. Haha I'm tearing up just writing about this woman! She is
great Smiling face with smiling eyes
I could go on and on about the people here. Some days are super rough
or long and no one can see us, but then at the end of the day I see
all the sweet things people did or the funny experiences throughout
the day. Maybe it's a homeless man and a toothless smile or ward
members with a sweet phone call, but I'm so grateful for this
Christmas time of the year and the wonderful message of Jesus Christ!
Im so grateful our Heavenly Father gave us this priceless gift and for
the hope he brings to all of us!
Buon Natale a tutti!!!!!
I love each one of you and hope you have a
very Merry Christmas!

Week 23

(Week 17 Caserta)

Crazy everything week!

The beginning of the week was a lot of running around so Sorella
Hamilton could say goodbye to people. She left on such a high note.
Awesome first lessons with our new investigators Silvanna, GianFranco
and lots of members and less actives. It was so sad watching her pack
all her things while I cleaned the house a tad to get ready for
Sorella Robertson.

Our sweet mission leader had us over on the base
Wednesday night for dinner before she left. Our mission leader, Bini,
and his wife Astrid are soooo awesome! Just huge examples of how to
stay strong in the gospel and strengthen others. We got them a mini
statue of Mary Joseph and Jesus to thank them for everything.

Thursday, TRANSFER DAY!!! We hauled dear Sorella Hamilton's luggage
down to the station and took the train to Napoli where we said our
goodbyes. Yes I cried... I've just learned soooo much from my dear
trainer and will miss her a lot!
Ciao Sorella Hamilton!!!!!

I only had to wait about an hour
before Sorella Roberston came!!!! For those who have seen the movie
Aquamarine, she is 100% Aquamarine but with a British accent!!!!! She
is the silliest, happiest person I've ever met! She has so many silly
awesome stories to tell which is great because I love hearing her
accent. Haha but she is also an awesome missionary! This is her last
transfer but she is still giving missionary work her all. She is so
awesome and I'm excited to spend Christmas with her.

Some new words
I've learned...
Jumper: means sweater
Ladder: means a run in the tights
You don't say parentheses, only brackets

We have Anziano Borden and his greenie Anziano Bowers here in Caserta.
Anziano Borden just finished being an assistant and is sooo intense...
It's awesome working with him though. We did a Mostra this Sunday with
them and he has no fear, just asking people who Joseph Smith is, it's
pretty cool to watch. Basically we will have a new stake in Caserta by
the end of the transfer!

Sorella Roberston and I have also been everywhere this past week! I'm
trying to help her get to know everyone!!! It's been fun introducing
her to people and showing her around the city. I've definitely loved
the responsibility not only to know the area but I feel like my
language is really really improving because I am doing a lot of
talking because I know the people.

In all the shop windows there are nativities! It's such a beautiful
sight to see as we walk everywhere! I love this time of year to really
remember the Savior and the true purpose of Christmas. I'm so grateful
for the Savior and the small amount of time I get to be here in Italy
helping others find Him in their lives. The church is soooo true!!!!!

Week 22

Hiked a Vesuvius Volcano for P-Day last week.

(Week 16 Caserta)

Sorella Nelson...

MONDAY: Pday was well spent as well as our money. Quick run to our
lovely mall for some winter supplies! Sure is getting chilly here!
After grabbing some gloves, scarf, and tights we went to see some less
active women. A bidone (no show) and bad feeling later we headed home
to plan and make calls for the night.

TUESDAY: Went hunting for another less active woman but the address we
had led us to a grocery store so that was a bummer... We tried to see
another woman but she wouldn't answer, and we stopped by a referral
named Luisa and she told us that she was busy all the time and she
doesn't know when we can come see her BUT... She talked to us!!!
Making those small steps!!!

Had a beautiful pranzo and lingua then
headed back out to see Joy. She had forgotten about the appointment
and wouldn't answer her phone so we buzzed over to Maria Russo! She
loved the talk on mothers by Jeffery R. Holland about mothers.

English
Course time! The Anziani couldn't come so I took advanced course and
we learned all the words for the nativity! This day was the longest most disheartening day ever and we sat down at the end of the day wondering
what we were doing wrong... BUT......little did we know our week would
turn around!!!

WEDNESDAY: DDM in Napoli! We all brought Thanksgiving items for a
feast! A turkey ( thank you American members) potatoes, pumpkin
cheesecake and whole sort of array of sweets! Haha super healthy! We
met up with the Pozzuoili Sorelle for a scambio in Caserta. Sorella
Puzzey and I went to a member home and then to another member Rory's
home. At Rory's we were going to tell her about the Book of Mormon
because she remembers nothing and we were so glad we did! This
adorable 21 year old Alice lives with Rory and was there! We committed
both of them to read the Book of Mormon and now Alice is an
investigator!

Sorella Hamilton and Hassell went to finally see Joy!
She was super smiley and happy which is rare and they also got to see
the daughter of Maria Russo! So many little tender mercies of being
able to see people and having our plans work out was just the best!
District Meeting

THURSDAY: we switched companions and Sorella Hassell and I went to
find not active members and see darling Sorella Messina! I LOVE
Sorella Messina! She is the only member in her family and she is in
Chiesa every single week! She made us a "very special pranzo" and we
ate, laughed, had a good time with her and her husband Franco. When it
came time for the spiritual thought Franco just flat out awful. He was
yelling and just totally drove the spirit away. Sweet Sorella Messina
bore her sweet testimony and then we all got in the car for them to
take us home. I thought Franco knew where we lived because he knew the
street name but turns out he didn't... He was yelling at me to give
directions and I was so overwhelmed! I was so grateful for Sorella
Hassell and her help giving directions to get us home. Poor Sorella
Puzzey and Hamilton were planning to see Rosa but the bus never came!
They ended up getting little details like train times taken care of
for the rest of the week. Over all awesome successful scambio!

Sorella Hamilton...

THURSDAY PART 2: After sending the Pozzuoli sisters back to their
city we had a wonderful language study and did a bit of extra
planning.....we tried to pass by some peeps before corso but no one
was digging it. We brought hot chocolate and cookies to eat with the
elders afterwards because it was Anziano Purparis (and we didn't know
it then, but Anziano Mic's as well) last English course! They're good
elders. Anziano Purpari goes home today!! Ahhh!! Also, shoutout to my
girl Sister Nelson for being a rockstar oggi. We had each chosen a few
English course students to talk to about taking the lessons, and I
came out with a big fat nothing and she took down two phone numbers!!
She's awesome!!

FRIDAY: We tried to visit the Izzo's during our scambio, but the bus
never showed up (#italy) so we took the train to a nearby city and got
a ride to their house. On the drive over Fratello Izzo told us his wife
had decided she didn't want to be taught, but he told her that she
needed to tell us herself. So we entered the house, I went to the
bathroom, and Fratello Izzo went upstairs to grab some stuff, and Rosa
told poor poor Sorella Nelson all alone at the table that she didn't
want to be taught. Hahahaha major bummer. But we had a great meal,
this is the first time I've walked out of their house instead of
waddled, and shared a really good spiritual message.

It wasn't the
full lesson we had planned but I know the spirit touched Rosa's heart.
She's not ready yet, it's visible when we mention the church or
gospel, but I know she will be. Piano piano! She's such a good woman
regardless of her faith.
Rosa and Fratello Izzo

We then got a bidone and a half, started
little weekly planning, and then Anziano Purpari, who's mom is from
Napoli even though they live near Bologna, made us pizza! It was
delicious! So we ended the day with a pizza with the Elders and Daniel
and Denis, our faithful YSA friends.

SATURDAY: transfer call day. There is nothing in the world that
preoccupies a missionary like transfer call day. Especially when
you're in your third transfer with your greenie and there's an eight
week transfer coming up.

The call came right after we FINALLY found
the house of a less active woman who we've been searching for for
weeks. Turns out she lives at number 7 instead of number 8.

This
sounds like a small thing, why did it take us weeks to find it?
Because we're in Italy. And number seven was across the street, a
small park, in the back of a different apartment building, and up the
street a hundred yards from number eight. Don't ask me how far a
hundred yards is. I don't want to talk about it. Anyways, THE CALL.

The assistants called (we were freaking. Usually the assistants call
if nothing exciting is happening aka when you stay together) and I
answered because I knew I was leaving and I just couldn't take it
anymore.

Sorella Hamilton is going to Ostia/Roma 4 with
five-transfer-old Sorella Mckenzie (She is in her 11th and I, Sorella
Nelson am in my 4th to give you perspective) We then ate pranzo and
did a quick lesson with the family (who doesn't dig the vangelo) of an
investigator (who totally digs the vangelo). It was a sweet time.
They're a sweet family.

We then had an AWESOME lesson with a less
active, the daughter of the slightly crazy woman who plucks birds in
her bed, who basically realized during the lesson that she wants to
come back to church and bring her 2 year old sweetness Luisa and her
compagno Antonio. Love her.

Then we really did have to weekly plan
because Multiple musical notesfor the first time in foreverMultiple musical notes we had been too busy to do it
beforehand AND we had an appointment with our amico Gianfranco. Long
story he has but the short story is he's awesome and totally preparing
for baptism.

DOMENICA We had a bittersweet church where I had to say bye to
everyone!! It was a great fast and testimony meeting, I got to
translate for the youth Sunday school class which I LOVE doing, and
third hour was a crazy mix of running around with wheelchairs, women
with fur coats (fur is like, a REALLY big thing here, America too?),
adorable children practicing the primary program, and crazy relief
society translation (done by the awesome wife of the bishop thank
goodness!!!) and then we capped the services off with lots of
pictures, hugs, kisses, promises that the next sister is great. Lunch,
finishing weekly planning, and an evening full of meetings in church.

Sorella Nelson....

I'm so so so so happy to be staying in Caserta for this next 8 week
transfer!!! So many good things are on the verge of happening and this
last week was soooo good!!!! I can't wait to meet Sorella Robertson
and we will just go crazy with our work! I love my job as a missionary
and this wonderful wonderful life! Wouldn't trade it for anything!!!

Week 21

(Week 15 Caserta)

This week...
Sorella Hamilton

MONDAY We spent pday in sorrento with the Napoli elders, it was so fun
and beautiful!! We had a ton of fun and got some sweet lemony
souvenieurs:) we found a pizza place in Napoli with '3 pizzas for 10€'
sign and totally stuffed ourselves with 1.5 pizza each. #worthit. Unfortunately though this day was pretty stormy (didn't ruin our fun
in Sorrento!) but it did put a monkey wrench in the entire Italian
train system. Trains were cancelled and delayed all over the place in
a classic display of how everything in Italy works. If the sky is
gray, don't leave the house. So we did get home later than expected,
forcing us to cancel an appointment which was a bummer BUT we did get
some stellar phone calls made!

And then after a series of very curious
events I found myself riding on a a grate type seat on the back wheel
of the borrowed bike from one of our less actives, clinging to Sorella
Nelson as she pedaled us furiously to the church at 9pm, bundled up in
every warm clothing I had, with a fork in my hand ready to dig through
the dirt in the planter next to the door to find a church key that we
thought had been lost to the world. Once again, we were quite the
sight.

TUESDAY This day included lots of running around, trying to find
people, key copiers, members who gave us bidones, and all sorts of
things. We did have a special little experience with Sorella Bove who
wants us to teach one of her friends! So that should be happening
soon.

WEDNESDAY Another zone conference. Another day we had to wake up at
like five. We shivered our way to the train station in the early
whispering a of he morning, boarded a cozy train to Napoli, and met
the Battipaglia sisters at the station so that Sorella Barona and I
could practice our addestramento. I ate a mortadella sandwich for
breakfast. Zone conference was good, lots of inspiration and
motivation, pictures can be found on the mission blog. Then another
crazy series of events. One of the sisters in our zone had a seizure
and bizarre episode during lunch, so to be short, I went home to Caserta with her while Sorella Nelson went with her companion back to
their city so they could grab supplies for a trip to Rome. But, when
we were notified that this sister would in fact be emergency
transferred to Rome, she and I hobbled to the train station, took a
train back to her city so she could pack her bags and say some
goodbyes.

Zone Conference November 2015

I was so exhausted this day. But I'm so grateful for the
loving care that was shown to this sister during her episode. I've
never seen such priesthood power so close before. President Waddoups
and the zone leaders gave her a blessing of health so powerful that it
silenced all the missionaries in the chapel for the duration of it and
long after. It was a really really crazy day. And she's okay.

Sorella Nelson:

THURSDAY
We ended up in Battipaglia to help the sisters pack up to take her to
Rome. The Assistants came and we loaded up Sorella Gidalgo Guzmans
stuff and sent our Sorelle on their way to Rome! We hurried to the
train station and because there were train strikes had to wait for
about 2 plus hours for our train. We SLEPT all the way home we were so
exhausted from the last crazy 24 hours!!!

We had a lovely
American/Phillipino Thanksgiving dinner with a wonderful couple on the
American base! It was just the couple, us, and the Anziani. We ate turkey (that's a given), cranberry sauce, rolls, potaters and gravy, rice, shrimp
salad, egg rolls, green bean casserole, the spiciest stuffing ever, and pecan and apple pie and ice cream!  It was very different but I loved it.  We stayed for about two hours.
Kindest couple ever and they made each of us a "take out" box so we
had lunch for the next day! Man, I have forgotten how heavy American food is!!  I felt sooooo gross and almost sick after. Everything was so sweet and just heavy!!  Haha  we were talking after how we didn't have a fruit course or any fresh tomatoes.
Then we caught the train to get back for
English Course! Once again, we LOVE our English course students!!!

FRIDAY
Went to try to find a less active, we think the mother gave us the
wrong address... Anywho... We will find her SOON! Then our day was
just ALL OVER!!! To the church to scan a receipt, bus station looking
up times, back to the church, then to the train station, sometimes a
casa or church planning etc. We ended the day with the Sorrentino
couple from the ward! They are sooo awesome! We were all spiritually
uplifted with the wise words of Il Libro di Mormon and we ate some
delicious pasta, cheese and tomatoes, and lovely bland panettone cake.

SATURDAY
This wonderful wonderful woman Jacqueline was a less active referral
we found! She is from Uruguay and when her family moved to Italy they
didn't know where the church was so they stopped coming! She and her
mother are cento per cento spectacular! We met at their train station
and they drove us to their supermarket they own! We went in a little
back room and Jacqueline made us sandwiches and brought juice from the
supermarket! Super cool! They want to come back to church and we hope
to see the, this next Sunday. We also want to try to teach her 14 year
old son and her husband! #eternalfamilies

SUNDAY
The good ol Chiesa! I gave a talk this day, huge shoutout to Sorella
Hamilton and our friend Daniel for helping translate it into Italian
for me! Came home, pranzo, had time for a quick nap, language study
and went to the Familiga Galardo where we shared a message about
prayer.

Sorella Hamilton brought her ribbons and had them tie a knot
holding both ends and not letting the ribbon go. (You have to fold
your arms, pick up the ends of the ribbons, then undo your arms and
then you can do it) hence, prayer works wonders! We ended the night
with a gesso with the Anziani, this week about English course. A
"lovely" man who spoke English came and "fell in love" with me and
tried kissing my hand Unamused face... Grazie a Sorella Hamilton, we got the
strange man away.

Haha awesome night and hopefully will have more
"students" (investigators)!

I've learned a lot this week about patience and humility. With the
crazy events and that we only had three lessons total this week I know
that because things don't always work out how we planned, it doesn't
mean that we failed. Things happen that are out of our control.
Heavenly Father knows when we try and is proud of all effort that we
give for his work!

Ponderize scripture: Matt 26:21-22
